Big Blue Bus fares work better when you tap
Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus is easier when you separate cash from tapping. Riders using TAP, a mobile ticket, or a contactless card get the lower regular one-way fare listed by Big Blue Bus. That payment also includes a Big Blue Bus transfer window. Cash can still work, but it costs more and does not carry the same transfer value.
That small fare detail can matter on a day across town. You might ride between downtown Santa Monica, UCLA, the E Line, the beach, or a bus transfer point. TAP also works across many Los Angeles County transit systems, so it can be simpler than treating Big Blue Bus as its own island.
TAP can hold stored value, BBB passes, and some regional passes. Stored value works like a transit wallet. Tap the card and the right fare is taken. Mobile tickets and contactless bank cards give other ways to ride without cash.
Fare amounts can change, so use the current Big Blue Bus fare page before relying on a number. The steady rule is simple: for most riders, tapping is smoother and cheaper.
