Yuba City's Sikh Parade is part of its Valley identity
Yuba City's annual Sikh Parade grew from a local community tradition into one of the largest Sikh gatherings outside India, adding a major cultural layer to the Sacramento Valley city.
Yuba City sits in a farm region known for crops, river land, and wide Valley skies. It also has one of California’s strongest Sikh community stories. The annual Sikh Parade, also called Nagar Kirtan, began locally in 1980 and has grown into one of the largest Sikh gatherings outside India.
That is not a side detail for the city. It is part of how Yuba City is known around the state and beyond. The parade brings families, visitors, music, prayer, food, service, and a long procession through town. Some people come for religious reasons. Some come because it is one of the biggest public cultural events in the region. Either way, the streets show a side of the Sacramento Valley that is easy to miss if you only picture orchards and rice fields.
The farm connection and the cultural connection fit together. Punjabi Sikh families have long been part of California agriculture, and Yuba-Sutter became one of the places where that story took deep local root.
For Yuba City, the parade adds warmth and scale to the map. It is a local tradition, a regional gathering, and a California immigration story all moving down the street at once.
