El Cerrito's Hillside Natural Area is open space inside the city
El Cerrito has a strong hillside identity, and the Hillside Natural Area makes that easy to see. It has about 107 acres of city-owned open space with native plants, oak woodland, riparian areas, and trails used for recreation and emergency access.
The views are part of the draw. From the open space, people can see across the Bay toward San Francisco, Oakland, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Mount Tamalpais. That is a lot of landscape for a park tucked into a dense East Bay city.
The area also has a community story. In 2013 and 2014, local supporters helped the city buy the Madera property, which connected the north and south parts of the natural area. That kind of local effort is part of why the open space still feels cared for.
For a visit, use one of the listed access points and stay on the trails. Dogs are allowed under their owner’s control and on leash, and open flames are prohibited.
