California smog checks start with the DMV renewal notice

California smog-check timing depends on the vehicle and the DMV renewal notice, while BAR is the place to check Smog Check rules and station information.

If your California renewal notice asks for a smog check, start there. The DMV notice usually tells you if a smog certificate is needed before renewal can finish.

DMV handles the car record. BAR handles the Smog Check program. BAR is the better place to check station types, program details, and repair help.

That split helps when the car is older, recently bought, from out of state, or close to renewal time. The better question is, “Does this car need a smog check for this DMV step?”

Before you pay, check the renewal notice, plate or VIN, and the current DMV and BAR pages. If the car needs a special station type, do not guess from a shop sign. Use the official Smog Check page first.
