Sebastopol still keeps Luther Burbank's outdoor workshop
Luther Burbank used his Gold Ridge farm in Sebastopol for decades of plant experiments, and the preserved farm still lets visitors walk through that living local history.
Sebastopol has a special garden story. In 1885, Luther Burbank bought land on Gold Ridge, west of downtown. He needed more room to test fruit trees, flowers, vegetables, grains, and plant crosses.
For about forty years, this farm worked like an outdoor laboratory. Burbank introduced more than 800 plant varieties during his career. His work touched many California plums and prunes. It also included the Shasta daisy, plumcots, thornless blackberry, spineless cactus, and the ancestor of the Idaho potato.
Only a few acres of the old farm remain, but those acres matter. The preserved site includes the cottage area, older plant specimens, paths, and a nursery. Some plants are Burbank-developed varieties. Others are fruit trees suited to the Sonoma County climate. The city owns the property, and the Western Sonoma County Historical Society helps care for it.
It is a quiet stop, but it carries a big idea. Sebastopol’s farm past included experiments alongside familiar crops. At Gold Ridge, a small town became part of a larger story about testing, patience, and how new food and flower varieties come into the world.
