Santa Rosa is where Peanuts found a long home
Charles M. Schulz lived in Santa Rosa for decades, and the museum there keeps Peanuts tied to the city where much of his later life and work took shape.
Santa Rosa has a quiet claim on one of the most famous comic strips in the world. Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, lived here from 1958 until his death in 2000. That is a long time for a cartoonist whose work reached readers far beyond California.
The Schulz Museum is in Santa Rosa for that reason. His studio was here. Redwood Empire Ice Arena, better known to many fans as Snoopy’s Home Ice, was here too. The city is part of the everyday setting around Schulz’s later life, not a place borrowing a famous name after the fact.
That is why the museum feels more personal than a simple character stop. Peanuts can be funny and gentle, but it also has a lot of feeling in it: worry, hope, friendship, missed chances, and small brave tries. Seeing it in Santa Rosa makes the strip feel connected to a real working life.
The museum opened in 2002 and has welcomed visitors from around the world. For Santa Rosa, it adds a sweet cultural stop that balances the city’s wine country, redwood, garden, and downtown stories. California history includes missions, mines, and movies, but it also includes a desk, a pen, a skating rink, and a beagle who made the whole world smile.
