Redding has a bridge that really works like a sundial

The Sundial Bridge crosses the Sacramento River in Redding and uses its tall design to cast a moving time shadow.

The Sundial Bridge is the kind of landmark that makes a simple walk feel a little surprising. It crosses the Sacramento River in Redding and connects the north and south sides of Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

The bridge opened on July 4, 2004. It is a pedestrian bridge, public art piece, river crossing, and entrance to the Sacramento River Trail system all at once. The white mast and glass deck make it easy to recognize.

The fun detail is that it really is a working sundial. The shadow is so large that it can mark time only for part of the day, roughly late morning through midafternoon, and the shadow can move about a foot per minute when conditions are right.

That is what makes it such a good Redding story. A practical bridge also asks people to look down, look up, and notice the sun, river, trail, and city together. It turns a crossing into a small lesson in place.
