Piedmont's cityhood story has a firehouse at the center

Piedmont's 1892 hotel fire, early fire department, City Hall firehouse, and Oakland-surrounded location help explain why it became its own city.

PiedmontFire DepartmentAlameda County

Piedmont is surrounded by Oakland, so it can feel like a quiet pocket inside a much larger city. One old fire shows why Piedmont wanted its own local services.

In 1892, the Piedmont Hotel burned. Horse-drawn fire engines had to come from Oakland, and they took more than two hours to arrive. The hotel was lost. That memory became part of the push for Piedmont to handle its own fire protection.

The Piedmont Fire Department began serving the city in 1907, just two years after incorporation. The early firehouse was built into the same structure as City Hall, and it still sits in that same location, even though the building has changed over time.

Piedmont’s civic center carries a useful story. City Hall is also a reminder that local control, fast emergency response, and a clear town identity mattered from the start.
