Livermore has a light bulb that became a tiny legend

Livermore's Centennial Light Bulb has been shining since it was first installed at a fire department hose cart house in 1901.

LivermoreCentennial Light Bulbfire station

Livermore has a local landmark that is almost comically small: a light bulb. The Centennial Light Bulb is known as the world’s longest burning light bulb, and it lives at Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Station 6.

The bulb was first installed in 1901 at the fire department hose cart house on L Street. Over time, it became less of a utility item and more of a local story people could point to with a little pride.

That is the charm. California history does not always need a giant bridge, mission, mansion, or mountain pass. Sometimes it is a piece of ordinary equipment that quietly lasts long enough to become famous.

If you try to see it in person, remember that it is at an active fire station. Visiting depends on on-duty personnel being available, so this is a small, respectful stop rather than a place to treat like a big museum.
