Newland House shows Huntington Beach before the surf brand
The 1898 Newland House is Huntington Beach's oldest residence and points back to ranch land, crop fields, and pioneer family life near Beach Boulevard.
Huntington Beach is easy to picture as a surf town, but Newland House pulls the story back to farms, family, and open land. The house was built in 1898 for William and Mary Newland and their ten children. It is the oldest residence built in Huntington Beach.
The old ranch was not a small backyard farm. Newland Ranch covered more than 500 acres, stretching from Beach Boulevard to Magnolia Street and from Yorktown Avenue south to Atlanta Avenue. That is a big piece of today’s city, especially when you think about how busy those roads and neighborhoods are now.
The crops also tell the story. The Newland family grew lima beans, sugar beets, celery, and later chili peppers. Before beach tourism and surf culture became the loudest parts of the city’s image, this part of Orange County was tied closely to fields, soil, irrigation, and family farms.
Newland House is a good place to hold both pictures at once. You can know Huntington Beach for the pier, waves, volleyball, and beach rules, while also seeing the older farm layer behind it. The house makes that past concrete. It is a real building on Beach Boulevard, a place where the city’s farm roots are still easy to picture.
