Hawaiian Gardens fits a lot of city life into less than a square mile

Hawaiian Gardens is one of Los Angeles County's smallest cities by land, with parks, city services, freeway access, and a casino district packed close together.

Hawaiian Gardens is small on the map, but it has a busy local footprint. Its land area is listed as 0.9 square miles. It sits near the 605 freeway in southeast Los Angeles County. Homes, parks, schools, shops, city offices, and traffic routes are close together.

After incorporation, the city spent a lot of time on services and local fixes. That work includes school help, after-school programs, recreation space, housing and shop repair programs, police service, streets, and parks.

One thing makes Hawaiian Gardens unusual: the casino. The city is one of a small group of Los Angeles County cities that permits casino gambling. The Hawaiian Gardens Casino has been part of the business area since 1996.

The small scale is the main point. Hawaiian Gardens is a compact Gateway-area city. A park, school, city office, freeway ramp, or business block may be only a few turns away.
