Fairmead turned landfill work into an Ice Age fossil story

The Fossil Discovery Center near Fairmead grew from fossils found at a Madera County landfill, including Ice Age animals from the San Joaquin Valley.

Fairmead has a fossil story in a plain place: the landfill. Fossils were found there in 1993. The Fossil Discovery Center now sits across the road from the find.

The center shows Ice Age life from the San Joaquin Valley. That means mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, short-faced bears, and other animals. It makes the valley feel much older than its farms, roads, and towns.

This Central Valley stop changes the way the flat land looks in your head. A field or landfill can seem plain from the road. Under the surface, the valley has layers of water, soil, animals, weather, and time.

It also works well as a family stop. The idea is simple: big fossils were found nearby, and now you can see what they tell us. Look up hours before going, since small museums can change schedules by season, staff, or school-group use.
