Bidwell Park gives Chico two very different kinds of green space
Bidwell Park in Chico stretches nearly 11 miles, with flatter shaded Lower Park and rougher Upper Park foothill terrain along Big Chico Creek.
Bidwell Park is Chico’s defining outdoor place. It began with Annie Bidwell’s 1905 donation of about 2,500 acres and later grew with additional land.
Today the park covers 3,670 acres and runs nearly 11 miles. Manzanita Avenue divides Lower Park from Middle and Upper Park. Lower Park is flatter and more shaded, while Upper Park reaches into Sierra Nevada foothill terrain and rockier formations.
That split matters for planning. A picnic in Lower Park and a hot hike in Upper Park are not the same outing. Check city updates for gates, trail status, fire rules, and heat before heading deep into the park.
