Almanac note · Outdoors
Rattlesnake season is mostly about space and attention
CDFW rattlesnake guidance is a useful reminder for trails, warm yards, woodpiles, pets, and kids during active snake weather.
Rattlesnakes are part of California life in many warm, dry, rocky, grassy, and foothill places. Most people will never have a problem if they give snakes room and stay aware on trails and around yards.
The simple habit is to look before reaching, stepping, or moving things. Watch around rocks, brush, woodpiles, tall grass, garages, and shaded edges on hot days. Keep dogs close on trails, and teach kids not to poke or pick up any snake.
If you see one, back away and let it move on. If a snake is in a place where people or pets cannot safely avoid it, use local animal control or qualified help. If someone is bitten, treat it as an emergency and get medical help right away.
