Earthquake early warning is a setup task before shaking
California's earthquake early warning system and MyShake app can send alerts after an earthquake starts, giving people possible seconds before shaking arrives.
Earthquake early warning is not a prediction. It works after an earthquake has started, when sensors detect shaking and a warning can reach some phones before stronger shaking arrives.
That means setup matters. The MyShake app, phone settings, location permissions, and alert settings need attention before a quake. A few seconds can be useful only if the phone is ready and the person knows what to do.
Use the official earthquake warning pages to set up the app and understand its limits. Then make the home basics boring and ready: secure tall furniture, know safe spots, keep shoes and a flashlight near the bed, and practice drop, cover, and hold on without making it dramatic.
