Dam inundation maps are planning maps

California dam inundation maps show hypothetical flooding from a dam failure and are meant for emergency planning, not a prediction that flooding will happen.

If you live below a reservoir, near a creek below a dam, or in a low valley, a dam inundation map can be worth a calm look. The map is about planning. It shows flooding that could happen in a made-up dam failure scenario.

California requires many dams under state safety review to have these maps and emergency action plans. The Department of Water Resources reviews the maps. Cal OES reviews the emergency plans.

That does not mean a dam problem is expected at your address. It means planners need to know what areas could be affected in a very serious event. For a resident, the map can explain why a local route, alert, or plan exists.

Use the map with your county alert signup and local emergency pages. If you are buying, renting, insuring, or making a household plan, write down the nearest dam name, the local alert system, and the route out of the low area. Keep it practical and simple.
