Beach water warnings can change after rain

beach water qualityrain advisoryCalifornia Beach Watch

A beach can look inviting and still have a water-quality notice. California Beach Watch tracks several kinds of warnings, including postings, closures, rain advisories, and permanent postings.

That is most useful after rain, near storm drains, around lagoons, at enclosed beaches, and anywhere local health agencies are sampling water. A warning does not mean the whole coast is off limits. It means the exact beach and timing matter.

Before swimming, surfing, wading with kids, or planning a long beach day, look up the beach by name or area. Then pay attention to posted signs when you arrive. The online map and the sign at the beach should work together. If they do not match, slow down and use the more cautious current notice from the local health agency or beach manager.
