Catalina's bison are a movie-era surprise beyond Avalon
Catalina Island's bison are a memorable island fact: a non-native herd tied to old movie history and now managed carefully in the island interior.
Avalon gives most visitors the harbor side of Catalina. The island interior has one of California’s odder wildlife stories: bison. The herd is tied to animals left on the island by a movie crew in the 1920s.
The sight can feel surprising. You are on an island known for blue water, boats, coves, and a small harbor town, and then the road opens into dry hills where bison may appear at a distance.
They are memorable, but they are not native to the island. The Conservancy manages the herd while also protecting Catalina’s plants, foxes, birds, and wildlands. That balance is the real story: a movie-era surprise living inside a protected island landscape.
If you want to see that side of Catalina, plan it through an authorized tour or Conservancy information. Do not treat the interior like a city park. The best bison story comes with a guide, a road, and a little patience.
