Antioch has coal-country trails and a protected dunes story
Black Diamond Mines is a large East Bay park near Antioch, while Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge protects rare habitat that is mostly for learning, not wandering.
Antioch has two protected landscapes that are close in name but very different to use. Black Diamond Mines is the visitor-ready one, with trails, picnic areas, programs, and mining history.
The regional preserve covers nearly 8,533 acres. One standout detail is the Greathouse Visitor Center, which sits in an underground chamber from a 1920s sand mine.
Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge is more delicate. It protects rare plants and the Lange’s metalmark butterfly, and public access is limited because the habitat is sensitive. Treat that one as a place to learn about and protect, not a casual trail day.
