Hunting
Hunting licenses and field rules
Start with hunter education, licenses, tags, current rules, land access, and nonlead ammunition.
Hunting has layers. The license is only the first stop. Species, zone, tag, method, season, land manager, and access rules all matter.
CDFW is the starting point for hunting licenses, tags, hunter education, and current regulations. Read those pages before you plan around deer, bear, waterfowl, upland game, or a special hunt.
Then check the place itself. Public land, private land, fire closures, road access, and local safety rules can still change the plan.
First moves
- 1
Start with CDFW's hunting license page and hunter education requirements.
- 2
Check the current regulations for the species and zone.
- 3
Confirm the land manager allows hunting where you plan to go.
Watch for
- 1
A public-land label does not always mean hunting is open there.
- 2
Fire restrictions, closures, and road access can change during a season.
- 3
Local discharge rules and nonlead ammunition rules can sit in a separate layer.
